With the current economic situation, it isn't easy to find a job. Here are some tips to help stand out in this job market.

The job climate in 2009 is unlike any other time in the history of the United States. Even for extremely qualified people, finding work isn’t as easy as it once was. With a range of factors affecting the current economic situation, the job search has become more difficult. For those searching for a job, they have to have a stellar resume to even be considered for a position.

Due to the numerous layoffs, restructuring of businesses, continued downsizing, a NASDAQ correction, and concerns with the global market, the job market is now highly competitive. People who once thought they were secure in their jobs have suddenly found themselves without a position. If looking for a job, here are some tips to help stand out in this job market.

Is this the Right Field?

It is imperative that people take the time and determine where their skills, knowledge, and interests lie. It is crucial to understand oneself and determine the right direction in this market. People need to ask themselves questions and determine if they are in the right field and what they are really interested in.

Determine whether it is time to go back to school in order to improve credentials and marketability. If lacking in skills, knowledge or educational requirements, consider taking some classes or volunteering for additional experience and in order to be better equipped for future opportunities. When making a decision about the “right field”, scan the economic environment to see what the growth industries are and review research to determine where the jobs will be in the years to come.

Contact a Head Hunter

Once a decision has been made about the right field, contact a head hunter, a search firm, or a temp agency (depending upon the field) and determine the right agency that specializes in the field and ask for representation. Though this may take time (and a lot of phone calls), it may be well worth the effort.

Perfect the Resume & Cover Letter

The cover letter and the resume may be the only opportunity in the door of an organization. Make sure it is perfect. Be sure to show all of the significant accomplishments, illustrate a organization may have improved and provide specifics. Taking the time to market oneself is a crucial step in finding the right job. Ask others to review the resume and spend a little bit of money and have a professional view the resume prior to sending out. The money will be well worth it.

Be concise and make sure the resume is visually appealing. Also, make sure the cover letters are powerful, persuasive and tailor each one to the specific position.

Research the Company

This is one of the most important steps prior to an interview. It is essential to understand the mission and vision of an organization prior to interviewing. It also helps to be familiar with the structure of the organization and any future strategic plans. A lot of this information may be found online. There may not be specifics about a particular position online, but be aware of the organization and have the ability to ask detailed questions regarding the position.

Practice Interviewing

It is crucial to polish interviewing skills prior to participating in an interview. Research questions online and really think about the answers. Write down accomplishments and practice talking about them. Schedule "mock" interviews with friends and family and practice until confident with the interview process. Remember to share any information gleaned during the research of the company.

Send a Thank You Note

Lastly, mail a thank you note right within 24 hours after the interview. It may be the deciding factor for the organization.
